This page explains, honestly and specifically, what type-approval means, which of our product categories carry it, and what remains your responsibility to confirm before use on public roads in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.
An E-mark like this, moulded or etched onto a lamp lens, means that specific lamp has passed UN/ECE type-approval testing. Not every lighting product carries one — and this page explains why that matters.
Three Categories, Used Consistently Across Our Entire Catalogue
Every listing on carplaylux.com is labelled as one of the following three categories. We use "genuine OEM" only where a part is verifiably sourced from the original vehicle manufacturer or its authorized supply chain — never as a general marketing term for a similar-looking part.
Original Manufacturer Parts
Including used/pre-owned OEM assemblies removed from donor vehicles, inspected for function before listing. These carried factory type-approval as originally fitted; see the type-approval section below for what that covers once resold as a used part.
Factory-Specification Equivalents
New components built by third-party manufacturers to match factory form, fit, and, where applicable, wiring specification. These are not the original manufacturer's product and are never described as such.
Performance or Styling Upgrades
Products not intended to replicate a factory part and, unless the listing states a specific valid type-approval number, not warranted for use on public roads. This category most often applies to certain LED conversion and styling kits.
The UN/ECE Regulations Behind Vehicle Lighting
Vehicle lighting sold and used within the EU is governed by UN/ECE regulations, adopted into EU and national law through the EU General Safety Regulation and each country's own road-traffic code. A lamp that has passed the relevant test carries an "E-mark" — a circled letter E followed by a number identifying the approving country, and a regulation/approval number. Here are the regulations most relevant to our lighting categories:
Headlamps (Filament / LED Sources)
Governs main and dipped-beam headlamps emitting an asymmetrical passing beam or a driving beam, using filament or LED light sources.
Headlamps (Gas-Discharge Sources)
Governs headlamps fitted with gas-discharge (HID/xenon) light sources, including the associated ballast and levelling requirements.
Position, Stop & Rear Registration-Plate Lamps
R7 covers position, stop, and end-outline marker lamps; R48 governs the correct installation of lighting and light-signalling devices on the vehicle as a whole.
Direction-Indicator Lamps
Governs turn-signal lamps, including sequential and dynamic-style indicators — relevant to some of our rear light kits.
A part being "LED" or being shaped to fit a factory housing does not, by itself, mean it holds any of the above approvals. Approval is tested and certified for a specific lamp design, not for the general category of product.

Read This Before Ordering Any LED Lighting Product
Unless a specific product listing states a valid UN/ECE type-approval number applicable to that exact application, the item is sold for off-road, show, or motorsport use only, and is not represented, warranted, or intended for use on public roads. Road legality of aftermarket lighting varies by country, by vehicle, and by how the product is installed, and it is the buyer's responsibility to verify the legal status of a specific product with the relevant authority in their own country before installing it or using it on public roads.
This is not a limitation we apply reluctantly — it reflects the genuine legal position for a category where a product that is perfectly legal to sell can still be unlawful to use unmodified on a public road in a given country, depending on that country's own vehicle-lighting rules and how the specific vehicle is registered.

Consistent Terminology

Finding the E-Mark on a Lamp
If you want to verify a lighting product's approval status yourself, here is what to look for:
Locate the Marking
Check the lens or housing of the lamp itself — the E-mark is moulded or etched directly into the plastic or glass, not printed on a removable sticker or the box.
Read the Circled Letter
A circled "E" followed by a number identifies the country whose authority approved the design (for example, E4 for the Netherlands, E1 for Germany).
Read the Regulation Number
Nearby digits reference the specific UN/ECE regulation and approval number the lamp was tested against, such as R112 for a headlamp.

Who Checks Lighting Compliance in Each Market We Serve
Every country we ship to enforces UN/ECE lighting rules through its own vehicle-approval body and periodic roadworthiness inspection. Non-approved lighting is one of the most common reasons a vehicle fails this inspection, so we recommend checking with the relevant body below before fitting any lighting product to a vehicle used on public roads.
